In honor of America’s birthday coming up tuesday, this seems very fitting. Sports has always and will always bring the people together, and these 5 moments were some of the biggest moments in sports that brought the country together. Now in honor of America and the men and women who serve this country, let’s take a look at the top 5 “America! moments in sports
#5 Lee Greenwood “God Bless the USA” 2001 World Series
After what is considered the worst attack on American soil, the country rallied around the world series. Lee Greenwood’s performance of God Bless the USA sent chills down the spines of players and fans alike that night.
#4 Bruins fans sing the National Anthem
No lies, this moment still gets to me. It’s been 4+ years since the marathon monday horror here in Boston. A moment that was suppose to ruin a city brought us closer. I go back and watch this from time to time and still choke up when the crowd takes over.
#3 The 1992 USA Dream Team.
America finally allowing pro athletes to compete in the Olympics and boy did America show the world who’s boss. We routinely are at or near the top in medal counts, but almost none as impressive as the Dream Team (almost for a reason).
#2 Rick Monday saves the Flag
For those who are not familiar with this story. Some disgraceful shits took to the field during a Dodgers Cubs game to burn the American flag in protest. Gas already poured on the flag and flame about to be lit, Monday doesn’t hesitate for a second and saves the flag.
#1 The Miracle on Ice- 1980 US Olympic hockey team.
I have been saying for YEARS this is the greatest moment in American sports history (top 3 in American history as a whole). In the middle of the cold war, the Soviets had not lost a game in 20 years. These scrappy college kids defeated an unbeatable team. This might be the day Communism came to an end. Mike Eruzione scores the go ahead goal and Communism started shaking. The finale call “Do you believe in miracles?! YES!” is still the greatest call in sports history. The moment Communism fell.
